Responsibilities of Computer Lab Attendants

'Computer lab attendants' are the front-line of service to students and members of staff making use of IT Services labs. A lab attendant's mission is to provide an environment that is clean, safe and accessible for lab users to complete their academic computer related tasks.

Computer lab attendants are expected to:

  • open and close the computer labs according to the IT Services schedule.

  • be punctual for the duty and keep to their assigned schedule diligently. They should make themselves available (provided that they do not have lectures) to replace other lab attendants that may be sick.

  • switch on the workstations & air conditioners before opening the computer labs for users. The air conditioners must be maintained at the right temperatures.

  • maintain the arrangement of computer towers, keyboards and mice in order at all times of the day.

  • check and refill paper trays of printers. See that users do not tamper with printers or use their own paper. The printing area should be kept clean at all times of the day.

  • ensure that machines are in working order. Software and hardware problems that cannot be sorted by the lab attendants are to be reported via e-mail to support.itservices@um.edu.mt. The e-mail should contain a description of the problem, what was done to try and solve it, and the current status of the problem.

  • make themselves conspicuous and easy to find, so that users know who to ask for help. An identification card should be worn around the neck all the time while on duty. Lab attendants are expected to respond promptly and courteously to user needs. Every effort must be made to answer to a question or problem.

  • ensure that all lab users observe IT Services rules. Eating, drinking, smoking and use of mobile are strictly prohibited in the computer labs.

  • ensure that only notices having the IT Services date stamp can be affixed to lab notice boards. Students turning up with posters should be directed to IT Services Reception to be stamped.

  • ensure that the noise level is kept to a minimum. Loud, obnoxious or unethical behaviour that distracts other users must be stopped.

  • ensure that users do not install software or tamper with hardware.

  • patrol the lab and ensure that users are not using the CSC facilities for Internet games or any other use that is not academic.

  • switch off workstations & air conditioners before closing the computer labs. Chairs should be left in order. Floppy-disks, CDs, books and any other materials that users may leave are to be deposited in the 'lost & found' box at IT Services Reception desk.

  • inform the relevant person/s whilst signing out if the next lab attendant does not turn up at the end of the shift.

  • inform via e-mail (lab-duty.itservices@um.edu.mt) or phone IT Services reception (2340)3004 when they are sick or unavailable to perform duties. It is very important to inform IT Services as early as possible!
