A hoax virus message is a
false warning about a computer virus. These messages contain fabricated
descriptions of non-existent viruses and their damaging effects on computer
systems.

Typically recipients are
encouraged to forward these messages to all their contacts in their address
books. Therefore hoax virus messages are spread in much the same manner as
"chain letters." Such messages are maliciously designed to raise concerns
and mislead recipients.
