What's New at CSC - 2000

 
    7th December 2000
    The Computing Services Centre advises all users not to open e-mail attachments with the name 'Navidad.exe'. This is a computer virus being circulated via e-mail. Some computer programs may become unusable after executing this file. The F-Secure anti-virus update (fsupdate) can be downloaded from the CSC anti-virus site. More information about this virus is available at the Datafellows site.

    The Computing Services Centre has extended its printing facilities to several computer labs available on campus. Members of staff and students having a CSC Labs Account, can now make use of the laser printers installed in the following computer labs...

    The official presentation of 1.5Mbps international Internet bandwidth, donated by Maltacom p.l.c. and Datastream to the University, was held today. This bandwidth is being used to significantly boost Internet access from the University.

    Netscape Communicator version 4.75 is now available from the Computing Services Centre for download or from CSC Reception for one-day CD loan by members of staff.

    F-Secure anti-virus for Windows version 5.10 is now available from the CSC for download or from CSC Reception for one-day loan by members of staff of the University. For more information please visit our anti-virus pages.

    SPSS 10.0 for Windows is now available from CSC. Please visit SPSS page for more information about ordering, renewing and upgrading SPSS licence codes.

    A patch that eliminates a security vulnerability in Microsoft Office 2000 can now be downloaded from CSC Software Downloads Page.  MS Office 2000 users are strongly advised to download and install this update on their machines.

    Note that after installing this patch the "Show Me" function and "pop-ups" in Office Help will no longer function. More information about this update is available at the Microsoft website.

    The Computing Services Centre has updated its F-Secure anti-virus software site to detect and remove variants of the 'LoveLetter worm' virus. The update is available in a folder, called 'ExplorerZip-update', that can be downloaded from CSC anti-virus download site.

    Netscape Communicator version 4.73 is now available from the Computing Services Centre for download or from CSC Reception for one-day CD loan by members of staff.

    All users, particularly those who make use of any critical web services such as e-banking and e-commerce, are strongly advised to upgrade to Communicator 4.73. Previous Netscape versions were found to have a flaw in the security management of message transmissions over computer networks.

    A new virus called 'LoveLetter worm' is being circulated by e-mails with the subject line 'I Love You'.  For more information please read this article by Data Fellows.

    The Computing Services Centre has updated its F-Secure anti-virus software site to detect and remove the 'LoveLetter worm' virus. The update is available in a folder, called 'ExplorerZip-update', that can be downloaded from CSC anti-virus download site.

    The Computing Services Centre has upgraded its dial-up service to support dial-up connections using V.90 technology. Users with 56K V.90-compatible modems can now connect to the CSC Dial-up Service at faster speeds ...more information on how to connect at faster speeds.

    The Computing Services Centre has extended its printing services to include colour printing.  Members of staff and students having a CSC Labs Account, can now make use of the high-quality colour laser printer, available at CSC Lab B, to print on paper and transparencies...more information

    The Computing Services Centre has launched two WebSave schemes for members of staff making use of the CSC dial-up service. WebSave is a flat-rate telephone fee, which allows dial-up users to connect to CSC without being charged by Maltacom for the pulses...more information
